Using unlicensed music exposes Jaywing and our clients to significant legal and financial risk. All music used in client work must be properly licensed before delivery. Use the guide below to ensure you're sourcing, tracking, and applying music correctly.

Where to source music

Our primary platform for licensed music and sound FX is Artlist.io, which we have an active subscription for. Always use Artlist.io as your first preference before looking elsewhere.

Artlist.io

  • Covers music tracks, sound FX, and motion graphics audio under a commercial licence
  • Login credentials are stored in Keeper, access via the shared team vault
  • For full on-charge rates, refer to the Stock Imagery & Assets page

If our subscription is cancelled

  • Tracks downloaded during an active subscription carry a perpetual licence, existing projects and delivered work remain valid
  • Any new use of Artlist tracks after cancellation is not covered, including new projects or edits to existing ones
  • This makes it critical to download and save all tracks you intend to use while the subscription is active, and record them in the Usage Rights Calendar
  • Always verify the current licence terms at artlist.io before assuming coverage, terms can change between subscription periods

Other sources

  • If Artlist.io does not have what the project needs, speak to your account manager or delivery lead before sourcing from elsewhere
  • Any music sourced outside of Artlist.io must have a verifiable licence before it is used in any deliverable
  • Do not use music from YouTube, Spotify, SoundCloud, or any consumer streaming platform, these are not licensed for commercial use

Usage rules

Licences are not unlimited. Always check what the licence actually permits before applying music to a deliverable.

What to check before use

  • Confirm the licence covers the intended use case, broadcast, social, online video, and in-store use are often licensed separately
  • Check whether the licence is perpetual (lasts forever) or subscription-based (expires if the account lapses), Artlist.io tracks are covered for the life of the project if downloaded during an active subscription
  • Confirm whether the client has their own licence or whether Jaywing's licence covers the deliverable
  • On-charges must be raised for any music sourced outside of subscription entitlements

What is not permitted

  • Using a track beyond the scope of its licence (e.g. using a social media licence for a broadcast TVC)
  • Sharing downloaded audio files with clients or third parties
  • Re-using music from one client project on another without checking the licence terms

Usage Rights Calendar

We recommend maintaining a Usage Rights Calendar to track when music licences expire, particularly for any tracks tied to subscription platforms or time-limited rights.

What to record

  • Track name and artist
  • Platform sourced from (e.g. Artlist.io)
  • Licence type (perpetual, subscription, broadcast, etc.)
  • Date downloaded and subscription status at time of download
  • Client and project the track was used in
  • Expiry date if the licence is time-limited
  • Proof of licence, download receipt or licence confirmation URL

When a licence expires

  • Content using the track must be taken down or the licence renewed before the expiry date
  • Notify the relevant account manager or delivery lead with enough lead time to act
  • Do not assume a client is managing this, Jaywing is responsible for what it delivers
